Machine Quilting at Home

Machine Quilting at Home Workshop
You've made a quilt top, now what? You want to make a quilted garment and are you stuck at the first step---quilting your fabric? This class will get you started on using a simple home machine to quilt your quilt! You'll cover basting, marking options, setting up your machine, how to handle the bulk of a quilt at home, and straight stitch machine quilting. While you won't finish the whole quilting process during this time, you will be well on your way and have the confidence to continue at home!
Required Supplies:
- One of the following: A quilt top - throw size or smaller only please, especially if this your first home machine quilting experience! - OR fabric yardage to make a whole cloth quilt or to be later made into a garment.
- Batting at least 3 inches larger than your quilt top on all sides
- Backing (or lining if you're going the quilted garment route) at least 4 inches larger than your top on all sides - Please note: Some quilt sizes require backing fabric to be cut and pieced back together in order to have a backing that is large enough for quilting. Please make sure to check this before the workshop, as we will not have time to piece backing fabric in class. Please feel free to ask one of us in the shop for help figuring this out, or check out this tutorial from Kitchen Table Quilting about how to best piece backing fabric - https://
kitchentablequilting.com/ blogs/kitchen-table-quilting/ piecing-your-quilt-backing. - Quilting Thread in your color choice and bobbins to match - this will be visible on your quilt top, so think about what color you want to show on your quilt top and back (Cotton thread is the traditional choice for quilting, and we'll discuss cotton vs. polyester thread use in the workshop. You can bring both if you have them, bring what you have, or purchase cotton thread if you want to try out the traditional choice!)
- Quilting safety pins/basting pins - https://www.villagefabricshop.com/shop/c/p/Curved-Basting-Pins-2-in-x67473365.htm
- Optional: Quilt Rulers, scissors, marking tools, quilt clips. If you have quilting tools you are unsure how to use or want some practice on, bring them in! We will have plenty of quilt rulers for you to try out and practice on, but if you have rulers at home you want to learn from and get some experience with, please bring them in!
- Optional, but encouraged if you have one: Walking Foot for your machine. (Please note - not every machine comes with a walking foot, and they can be pricey if you are unsure if you like home machine quilting. If your machine did not come with a walking foot, do not feel that you have to buy one to try out home machine quilting. We'll cover what a walking foot is and how they can be helpful, but will also discuss quilting without them! If you are not sure what a walking foot is or if you have one, try a Google search for "Walking foot + your machine brand and model" and you should get results for what a walking foot looks like for your machine)
While you will not finish quilting your entire quilt in this short workshop, we will conclude with a demonstration and tutorial for how to square up and bind your quilt, so that you are prepared for when you finish your quilt at home!
