Learn more:
The Ethical Sweatshop is a pop-up sewing atelier dedicated to raising awareness about textile waste through design-focused approaches to upcycling. Our live sewing events brings sewists and the creative community together to produce limited-run, functional, and fashionable items from discarded materials, making offcuts, remnants and scraps new and fresh. All of the proceeds from this event support the local nonprofits The Art SHAC and The Piedmont Environmental Alliance.
Fostering the ethic of design craftivism, The Ethical Sweatshop builds community by raising awareness, creating upcycled items together, and fundraising for local environmental and arts organizations.
Why Upcycle Fabric?
Textiles are a major waste stream:
-
Right now only 13% of fabric is upcycled, the rest goes to the landfill
-
The average US consumer throws away approximately 81.5 pounds of clothing and textiles annually, leading to an estimated 11.3 million tons of textile waste in America alone
-
It can take 200+ years for textile materials to decompose in the landfill
